Journey Girls White Lace Dress Review

Journey Girls Outfit Review

The Journey Girls line is exclusive to Toys R Us.  Since the Journey Girls are a little bit skinnier than American Girl dolls or Our Generation dolls, the clothes are a bit different.  Journey Girls clothes made for Toys R Us fit the girls better than any other brand of outfits.  The downside to having a doll that is sized differently is that no one else makes outfits that really fit your doll.  It also limits the amount of outfits that are available.  Right now there are 8 full outfits from the London line and 4 half outfits (these usually are outerwear or extras to outfits such as scarves, shrugs, hats, etc.) Compare this to the 30 or so outfits that are out right now from Our Generation as well as American Girl.  At some point I hope that Toys R Us will give us more options for the Journey Girls.

One of the options that is available right now and the outfit that I am reviewing today is the white lace dress.   The dress retails for $16.99, but if you watch you can find it for around $12.99.  I love this dress set!  It is a great dress that can be semi-dressy, but still casual enough to wear for any occasion.

The set includes the lacy white dress with a purple ribbon around the waist, purple sandals, a purple “wristlet” purse, a lace headband and a hanger.

Getting the dress out of the package is pretty easy.  First cut the tape at the top of the box to get it open.

The dress is attached to a backing board that slides out of the box.  On the back of the backing board there is all sorts of tape.  Cut around any of the plastic tabs (6 in all) that are held down by the tape.

The red in the corner is an "I" fastener.  The pink is the rubber band.
The blue circles are around the tape that is over some plastic tabs.

There is also a clear rubber band that you should cut through (towards the top of the package), as well as three clear plastic “I” fasteners near the top that hold the headband on.   The dress is on a plastic bust that pulls away from the backing (once the tape is cut from around the plastic tabs on the back).  Once this plastic bust is free the dress comes off very easily.

The dresses top strap portion is just the lace, so you can see through it.  The rest of the dress has another layer of fabric underneath the lace.  The dress is form fitting for the Journey Girls, which is common with the Journey Girl line.  It’s not tight; it just fits the dolls thinner frame better than Our Generation doll clothes, or American Girl doll clothes.  This means that this dress will not fit an American Girl doll.  The dress has Velcro in the back to fasten it up.

I like the purple sandals.  They are very cute, with the plastic flower on the front.  I like that it is a little higher sandal with the strap around the ankle.  The strap does slide out of its buckle to make it easier to get the sandals on and off.  As Chavonne models the outfit she is very stable in the sandals, but she does have to lean back a little bit.

The wristlet is a cute little purse, but really has little function.  I had Chavonne holding hers by the strap with her hand, rather than hanging it on her wrist.  It is a little difficult to get it on her wrist.  The ribbon is just big enough to go around her fingers.  I wish the wristlet had a snap or something to keep it closed.  You can’t really put things in there, without them falling out.  After all every girl can use a place to keep her accessories!

The headband is great.  It is a circular headband, with elastic at the bottom of it.  I really like that it is white, because I can use it with all sorts of other outfits.  The lace is cut well and has no frays on the edges.  It fits great on Chavonne’s head!  Not too loose or too tight.  A great, versatile accessory.

Value 9 – The lace dress is the standard price for the Journey Girls outfits.  For the price I think this is a great outfit.  I would have loved to have seen a shrug with it and have the purse close, but even without these things, the outfit is still awesome.  The dress is crafted well.

Fitment 10 – This dress was made for the Journey Girls and as such fits perfectly!  It really shows off the dolls skinnier body.   The headband is a perfect fit!  The shoes are great.  My purses strap was a little tight, but still manageable.

Versatility 9 – The design of the dress lends itself to a lot of good play.  The girls could be going to a fancy tea party or just going out to hang out.  Other outfits shrugs or sweaters will go well with the dress.  The headband can be used with all sorts of other outfits.  The purple shoes are a little bit more limiting…but are still able to be used with other outfits.

Cuteness 10 – I love this dress!  Every one of the Journey Girls looks great in it.  It is a wonderful outfit to have in your dolls wardrobe.

Overall 10 – This is a must have if you like dresses for your dolls.  It is well made, has good accessories, is very cute, and if you wait and watch, can be found for a great price!

Our Generation "Tier I Come Outfit"

Our Generation Outfit Review

Target and Our Generation are doing a really good job of making cute, well made outfits for 18” dolls.  I found another deluxe fashion that I am reviewing today.  The deluxe fashions retail for about $16.99, but go on sale pretty frequently.

This dress is called “Tier I Come”.  It is an aqua, tiered, semi-formal dress, with tulle flowers on the left shoulder, and a white ribbon and bow around the waist.  The outfit also comes with an elastic headband with a large white flower on it, a white shrug, a pair of glittery shoes, and a hanger.  I was a little disappointed that the set didn’t come with a purse or clutch of some sort, but I have plenty of other purses that can go with this outfit.

Here you can see the tulle flowers on Meredith's shoulder.

The top of the dress is a satin material.  The bottom, skirt part, is also satin, but then has a layer of tulle over that.  I like this dress’s straps because they are a little wider than the pink “bubble dress”.   Making it not as necessary for Meredith to wear the shrug and still look really cute.  There is Velcro up the back to close the dress up.  This dress is not as loose as some of the other dresses that Our Generation makes.  It is still a little bit loose.

When I first saw the flower headband in the package I thought, “Oh my, that is a huge flower!”  Once the head band is on Meredith’s head though it looks just right.  It is super cute and I love the jewel in the middle of the flower.

I have mentioned in some of my other reviews that I am not a huge fan of the fabric shoes that are in the Our Generation fashions.  Well, these shoes are no exception.  One is a different size than the other, making one difficult to get on Meredith’s feet.  They are not very supportive and can hinder Meredith from standing as well as she usually does.  Lastly…I love the glitter, but hate that when I pick Meredith up I will have glitter all over my outfit.  Oh well…shoes are always worth a little sacrifice.

The shrug is a great little addition.  It is just the right size to compliment the dress.  It is a great accessory for lots of different outfits.  It is not real dressy, not too casual…plus it’s white so it goes with just about everything.  It is awesome!

Value 9 – I really, really like this outfit!  Especially with the blue eyed Journey Girls.  Everything is made really well.  The only thing I wish the outfit had is a purse.  This outfit is a great find for the price.

Fitment 9 – As with other Our Generation outfits, this one is a little loose.  It is one of the better ones for fitment though.  I would say that it close to the same fitment as the pink tiered dress by Journey Girls.  I have noticed that there can be variance from outfit to outfit in the Our Generation line.  So it could be that this particular dress is a little smaller.

Versatility 8 – I think this dress is a little more versatile than the bubble dress.  It’s not quite as formal looking.  Maybe I feel that way because of the larger shoulder straps.  The shoes are great…but may not go with many outfits.  The headband will go with almost anything.  And the shrug is wonderful for making any outfit warmer.

Cuteness 10 – This dress is really cute!  It especially looks good with Meredith and Dana’s blue eyes.  I love how the bottom of the dress flips up a little, giving it a flair.  The tiers are very pretty.  The tulle flowers work.  It’s a wonderful outfit!

Overall 9 – Grab this dress!  If your little one has a blue eyed doll…this is the dress for them.  As you can tell I really like this dress.  It didn’t get a 10 for a couple of reasons.  I’d like to see different shoes (I hate the cloth ones…and ohhh the glitter!), I would have loved to have seen a purse or clutch with the outfit, and I am unsure that every one of the “Tier I Come” dresses will fit as well as mine did.  Those concerns are very minor and should not deter you from getting this dress when you see it!

Journey Girls Pink Dress Review

Journey Girls Outfit Review

A pink dress is a must in a girl’s wardrobe.  The Journey Girls are lucky to have this pink tiered dress from the London collection of the Journey Girls line.  The dress retails for $16.99, but if you watch you can find it for around $12.99.  I really wanted to love this dress…but there were a few issues that made me just like it.

As you look in the package you can see that the set come with the layered, ruffled, bright pink dress, a white cardigan with a ruffled neckline and colored stitching, off-white, flowered sandals, a bright pink headband with a bow on it, and a hanger.

To get the dress out you first have to cut the tape at the top of the box and than slide the backing board that the dress is on out.

Looking at the back you will see that there are 4 plastic pieces that are held down by tape.  You will need to cut around these the get the shoes out and to release the clear plastic bust that the dress is on.  There are also 5 plastic “I” fasteners that will have to be cut.  Three at the top that are holding the headband on and two about half way down that are holding the cardigan to the board.

You will need to cut all of the "I" fasteners.  There are 5 in total.
Cut around the plastic flaps to get the sandals out.

Once you have cut all of these things the out fit is free from the backing…but not quite ready to play with.  The cardigan is held to the dress with 4 things of thread.  Two at the top near the neckline and the opening of the cardigan and two at the bottom of the opening on the cardigan.

If you pull the cardigan away from the dress a little you should be able to snip these with a scissors pretty easily.  Now the outfit is completely free of any attachments.

And here are where the issues start.  Even though I was very careful and did not cut either the cardigan or the dress as I cut the string attaching them, when I pulled the string out, it left a mark on the dress.

It is not a horrible mark, but it is there.  I washed the dress (because I was worried about color transfer) and the spot is a little less noticeable, but it is still there.   I also noted a small thread that was coming off of the neckline of the dress.  I clipped this and there were no real issues.

Here is my major disappointment with this outfit.  Looking at it in the box it reminds me a lot of Chavonne’s meet outfit from the Paris collection.  Chavonne’s dress is one of my favorite dresses that the Journey Girls come in.  The ruffles go all the way around the dress, giving it a wonderful look.   This dress’s ruffles are only in the front.  I think it does not look as good this way.  It really looks half done…or like the designer changed their minds halfway through the process of making the dress.   It is still a very cute dress and a great outfit.

I just think it could have been awesome and look more complete if the ruffles went all the way around.  I look at it this way…if this was an American Girl dress the ruffles would go all the way around (that being said…it probably would cost twice as much!)

The sandals are identical (except for the color) to the ones that came with the white lace dress.  These are great sandals.  They are cute, dressy, and help the doll stand really well.  Plus the color is perfect for many, many different outfits.

The headband is simple, but pretty.  I like the flower on it.  It is a full circle type of head band.  The elastic at the back of it is not so large that you can’t move the headband to the side.  Meaning you can have the flower at the middle of the dolls head or the side and still not see the elastic on the headband.

Value 6 – The dress itself is very cute.  I wish that the ruffles went all the way around.  I am disappointed that the dress was marked by the thread that held the cardigan on.  I also think that the dress is not as nicely made as the white lace dress.  However, the dress is still better made than some other companies’ dresses.

Fitment 10 – The whole outfit fits perfectly.  The cardigan is a wonderful fit.  The dress fits the way that it is supposed to.  The Journey Girl outfits really are the best fitting for these dolls, with both the American Girl and the Our Generation outfits being loose in most cases.

Versatility 9 – Two out of the three accessories to this outfit can be used with a multitude of other outfits.  The cardigan (even with the pink stitching) goes well with many other outfits.  And the sandals go with just about anything.  The dress itself is dressy, but not overly formal (like Jordanna’s blue gown).

Cuteness 8 – Like I said at the beginning I really wanted to love this outfit…and I did until I took it out of the package.  I was disappointed with the ruffles.  I do not like the way the dress looks from the side or from the back…but straight on this outfit is really cute.  I gave the outfit an 8 because the rest of the outfit is great on its own, and the dress isn’t horrendous…it just could have been better.

Overall 8 – I won’t go over my issues more than I already have.  The outfit could have been better, from the design to the quality.  This is still a wonderful outfit to have in your Journey Girls wardrobe.  The issues I had with the thread may be confined to my dress (I doubt that…but maybe).  Little girls will not be disappointed with this outfit set.  If you can find it on sale…buy it!

Rainy day

The weather has been rainy lately, but that hasn't kept the Journey Girls down! Jordanna, Chavonne and Callie went out for a walk in their new rain gear.

Chavonne is wearing a super cute outfit from the My Life collection at Walmart.  The outfit comes with the polk-a-dot pants, yellow and blue boots, a rain jacket (with a hood), an umbrella, and a dog with matching jacket and a hat umbrella.  Chavonne's dog didn't want to come out in the rain…he hates getting his paws wet!

Chavonne sees a puddle that she just has to jump in!

Jordanna is wearing an outfit from the Journey Girls line at Toys R Us.  This outfit is actually an accessory pack that includes the green jacket, pink boots, hat, and a cell phone.  The jeans are from Kelsey's original outfit.

Jordanna loves going for a walk after a good rainstorm!

Callie is dry and stylish in her outfit from the Our Generation collection at Target.  Named "A Spot of Rain", this adorable outfit comes with red boots, a rain jacket, rain hat and a red purse.  Callie loves the fun colors of the polk-a-dots on her rain coat almost as much a she loves stomping through the puddles.

Callie holds her hands up to the sky, relishing in the bright sun that has peeked out of the storm clouds after the hard rain.

The girls walk through the wet grass, frolicking in the warm sun.  Another great day of adventures for the Journey Girls.

Our Generation Outfit

How well do Our Generation outfits fit Journey Girl Dolls?

The Our Generation line is made for Target.  I really like this line of 18” doll clothes and accessories because of the cost, the variety, and the quality of the clothes.  Most of the clothes fit wonderfully on the Journey Girls.  They are a little big around the waist, but not horrible.  Some of the outfits have had skirts that are way to big and shoes that were much too large.  What I have noticed with this line compared to the Journey Girl line and the American Girl line is that there is not always consistency in craftsmanship.  For instance one dress will be larger than another (close…but off), cloth shoes are tight (in two cases one shoe was tight and the other was not for the same outfit), but plastic shoes are loose, while boots are almost perfect, belts will be large, some headbands will be loose.  Everything fits.  Nothing falls off.  Sometimes they just aren’t the best fit.  I just bought an Our Generation doll (boy do I like the Journey Girls’ face sculpt compared to the Our Generations’) to see if the fitment is an issue on her.  I’ll let you know in future reviews.

Toys R Us releases their outfits in lines.  Right now they are in the London line, before that it was the Paris line.  Target’s Our Generation line seems a little more random.  The line seems to follow the seasons.  Right now there are a lot more spring and summer type of outfits out.  Towards fall I see more coats, dresses with leggings, and outfits with pants.  But as I have gone through Target lately I continue to find winter jackets in with the swimsuits and spring dresses.  The main thing is there are a lot of different outfits to choose from.  Like the Journey Girls line there are two main lines of clothes.  The normal line (which normally costs $12.99 for an outfit) and the deluxe line (which costs $16.99 per outfit).

I found a really cute white dress by Our Generation.  It is called “Belle of it All”.  The set retails for $16.99 at Target.  It comes with a white rosette dress with a black bow at the waist, a pair of black satin shoes, a black purse, a pearl plastic headband, a pearl bracelet, and a hanger.

This dress is gorgeous!!!  If you were not able to get Jordanna with her beautiful gown, or if you are   looking for something similar to her dress…this is it.  The dress is calve length compared to floor length.  It is made with a satin underlay with the tulle rosette layer on top, compared to Jordanna’s all satin rosette dress.  But the look and over all feel of this dress is the same.  A beautiful formal feeling dress.  I see Dana going to a dance, a first Communion, or out to a play in this outfit.  My bow looks like it is upside down.  It doesn’t ruin the dress…it looks goofy to me sometimes, though.

I don’t always like the cloth shoes that come with the Our Generation outfits.  This time though they are pretty good.  I’d still love a better sole on the shoe.  I like the shiny look to the shoes and these ones both fit great.  Plus these shoes go with just about any outfit.

I like the headband, but don’t love it.  The pearls are a little big for my taste.  I think they stand up a little too much and make the headband look like a crown.  It’s very pretty, I personally just don’t like it much.

I do really like the pearl bracelet.  It has ribbon at the end so that the bracelet can be tied onto Dana’s wrist.  The ribbon is just the right length to make a cute bow.  I would have loved a clasp (like Jordanna’s necklace), but I’ll take this over the goofy way that Jordanna’s bracelet fastens.

The purse that comes with this outfit is outstanding.  It has a clasp on the top of it much like an old coin purse.  The clasp even opens and the purse can carry small items!  The only thing I don’t like completely is the ribbon for the strap.  They used a transparent cloth ribbon rather than a solid ribbon.  Very minor issue.

Value 10 – This is an awesome dress.  It comes with great accessories, it is very pretty and well made, and it is a great price.  As I said earlier, if you missed out on Jordanna’s dress, this is a fabulous alternative.   It is also a great dress for one of the other Journey Girls to wear when they go out with Jordanna.

Fitment 9 – This dress is a little loose at the top.  The shoes fit wonderfully.  The headband and bracelet are perfect.  One of the best dresses that Our Generation makes.

Versatility 8 – Well…the dress is very formal.   So there may be limited times that Dana or the other Journey Girls would wear this dress.  However the accessories are very universal.  The shoes go with anything, as does the purse.  The bracelet and headband can be used for any dressy outfit.  Great accessories!

Cuteness 10 – Hate it!  No…I can’t say enough how much I like this dress.  It is elegant with the tulle rosettes.  The black bow really makes the dress standout.  Cute!

Overall 10 – I bought this dress so that Jordanna had a dress that fit her personality, was similar to her original dress, and could be played with.   This dress fits all of those criteria…and it is super cute!  If you are having a hard time finding this in a Target store they do have it online (as of 6/3/14).  Target.com also has it packed with 3 other dresses.  Any way you can get this dress…get it (okay, I don’t know that I would pay $40 on eBay for this…but maybe)!

Chavonne's Introduction and review

Chavonne's Introduction

When the Journey Girls Dolls were first introduced Chavonne was named Taryn.  From what I can tell that changed after the 1st wave of dolls.  I have Chavonne from the Paris collection, mostly because I love her outfit (which ended up being the major disappointment with the doll).

I bought her after I started this blog…so I can do an opening!  Boxes for the Journey girls are exactly the same on the outside.  Chavonne looks crammed in her box…maybe because of her awesome hair.

To open the box, you will have to cut two pieces of tape on the top.   There is a cardboard backing that Chavonne is attached to.  If you hold the box top up and pull on the cardboard backing, it should slide out.
Cut the tape (circled in red) to open Chavonne's box.

Chavonne is attached to the inner cardboard backing.  It is sturdy enough to pull on and get her out.
Once the backing is out it is easier to see where Chavonne is attached.  Chavonne had a few more attachment points then the other Journey Girls I have purchased.  She is still a lot easier than opening a Barbie doll.

The back is pretty empty of tie-downs.  The plastic twist-ties at the bottom are really the only major things you have to worry about.  There are also two plastic "I hooks" that you will have to cut.

Untwist the twist-ties to loosen Chavonne's legs.

The two "I hooks" are about a 1/3 of the way up from the bottom.  They are holding Chavonn'es dress to the backing.

The last thing you will have to do to free Chavonne is cut or take off the two clear rubber bands that are around her neck.  I chose to take them off rather then try to cut them…because I am not always steady with a scissors.  You have to stretch the ends to get them off the plastic hook.  The hardest part is getting your finger looped in there to get the rubber band off of the hook.

Take the plastic rubber bands off to free Chavonne.
I found it easier to go through the side to get to the rubber bands.
Not too bad.  I thought the process was done…not so much.  There are lots of those "I hooks" hidden on Chavonne.  Here's where to find them.

There are two on her dress, near the edges.  These are the ones that where holding her dress to the backing.

There are two (one on each side) holding her lace shrug to her dress.  These are hard to see.  I noticed the one by the flower first…then found the one on the other side.

And then the last two are holding her headband to her head.  When I cut these I don't know where the other ends go.  I think they just go into her head.

Once all of the "I hooks" are cut Chavonne is completely free!  And here is what she looks like once she is free of her box.

She has got on a really cute navy blue dress with three layered ruffles at the bottom.  She has an off white lace shrug with a red fabric flower for over her shoulders, a matching lace headband with a bow, and red shoes that match her flower.  I think this is one of the prettiest “meet” outfits of the Paris collection.  It also goes well with Chavonne’s character.

From Toys R Us, “Chavonne loves to be the center of attention!  Because she is a natural-born leader, she makes an outstanding Class President.  Chavonne comes from a family of really great musicians who have encouraged her to sing and play drums as long as she can remember.  In fact, there’s not an instrument she won’t rock out on!  The Other Journey Girls love to hear her perform with the school marching band.”

Chavonne’s face sculpt is a little different than the other Journey Girls.   It seems to me that her eyes are different, but I can’t quite tell.  She has got beautiful dark curly hair.  Her hair is cut a bit uneven.  My doll seems to be a little heavier on one side than the other, but with a little manipulation her hair looks more even.   I like the little bit of rose color in her cheeks.

Chavonne has the same flexibility in her joints as the other Journey Girls Dolls. Her legs and arms are perfect as far as the stiffness of the joints.   She stands well on her own.  My dolls head moves really well.  With my other Journey Girls Dolls their head movement has been tight (especially with Jodanna).  Chavonne’s head moves easily from side to side and she has a little more motion up and down than the other Journey Girls Dolls I have reviewed.  Her head is not loose…it just moves more freely.

I said Chavonne stands well on her own…well that is not all the way true.  She stands well in anything other than her cute red shoes she comes with!  Unlike Kelsey, Jordanna, and Callie, Chavonne’s dress shoes are not flats.  They have a little heal on them that tips her forward.  Since the Journey Girl dolls have no articulation in their ankles, Chavonne has to bend at the hips.  This can make her look like she is arching backwards.  It’s not very bad on a hard flat surface.   On carpet I notice it more.

The big issue that I found with Chavonne is with her dress transferring color to the doll.  This has been an issue with three (Meredith, Dana, and Kelsey-although Kelsey’s may have been a vinyl issue, not dye transfer) of my Journey Girl Dolls.  Dark colors seem to be the biggest issue.  Both Dana and Chavonne have on dark colored pieces of clothing that transferred color.  Meredith transferred pink.  Chavonne’s marks are the worst of the bunch.  They are large and darker than on any of the other dolls.  All of the marks are on her upper breast plate and arms.

Color transfer on the front of Chavonne's torso.
The worst marks are underneath her arms where her arms pressed against the dress.  I tried washing the marks off with baking soda, (which has worked to lighten the marks on the other girls) but it did nothing.  I have since put Chavonne in a different outfit to make sure that no more color transfer occurs.  I'm not exactly sure that the dress is the cause.  I soaked it for hours and no color come out.

Here you can see the color transfer on Chavonne's arms.  I can't make those into freckles!
Even though Chavonne’s dress transferred color to her body, I still love it!  The outfit is very cute.   The dress itself is very form fitting on the top to the point of being tight.  It does not hinder her flexibility though.  The sweater shrug is awesome and goes well with her headband.  I wish her shoes didn’t make her lean forward, but other than that her outfit is great!

Results

All ratings are out of 10

Poseability - 8 – Chavonne has the most flexibility and best joints of the Journey Girl Dolls that I have.  I have noticed that each Journey Girl Doll is very different though.  So one Chavonne will not be as flexible as another one.  As I have mentioned in some of my other reviews, I wish that the Journey Girls had more range in their joints and were able to move their arms up and down (out to the side) a little better.  The kids will not really notice this issue, since it doesn’t change the play value of the doll.  For those that are displaying their dolls, there will only be a few poses though.

Quality - 6 – The Journey Girl Dolls in general are made well.  At the price point they are in I think they are a steal.  The vinyl that they are made of is good.  The joints are made well.  Chavonne’s joints are awesome.  The clothes are high quality…except for the color transfer.  And that brings me to the real issue with Chavonne.  It is not okay that her clothes transfer the color as much as they did.  I have bought other outfits for the Journey Girls and I’m now leery of any dark colored or bright pink colored clothes.  Chavonne is not unique to having trouble with dyes or inks.  All vinyl dolls have some susceptibility to being marked permanently.  Chavonne as a doll would be rated a 9 for quality, factoring in the issues with her clothes brought her down to the 6.

Adorableness - 9 – I love the Journey Girls faces in general, but I really like Chavonne’s!  She has got very cute facial features.  Her rosy cheeks and pretty hazel eyes are beautiful.  I like her hair, even though it is a bit uneven.  It is still very cute.  Even with all of the color transfer issues, Chavonne’s outfit is adorable!

Compatibility - 6 – There is no difference in the compatibility of Chavonne compared to the other Journey Girls. Other companies, such as American Girl and Our Generation, clothes fit, but are loose.  Dresses and coats fit better than pants, skirts and shirts.  The shoes fit great from either company.  And all of the accessories seem to fit.  I’ll have some reviews of other brands fitment in the future.

Overall Score - 7 - Without the dye issue Chavonne is a 9.  However, she does have the dye issue and therefore is scored lower.  I am happy that most of the dye is not visible with most outfits, but it is still frustrating that it is there.  Chavonne is a very cute doll with great articulation in her joints.  I would definitely recommend her to anyone looking for a cute 18” doll.
